Laptop Makers Shy Away From Multitouch Technology

Apple's iPhone is making multitouch all the rage on mobile phones but laptop makers are not rushing to add the technology to traditional notebooks.

Multitouch, which lets users control applications through gestures on a screen, may not be the best interface for laptops because of the size and placement of the screen. In addition,apple laptop battery, there's little integration between touchscreens and most software.

"You don't see a lot of touchscreen notebooks because it is not intuitive to reach up and start touching the screen when there is a good keypad," says Paul Moore,apple a1175 , senior director product management at Fujitsu, one of the world's biggest laptop makers.

Some pundits, such as Computerworld columnist Mike Elgan, argue that
computer interfaces of the future will likely blend multitouch with gestures and physics (using accelerometers to detect bumps,apple a1185 , shakes or the device's orientation in space).

Already, many computing devices are using some or all of these techniques. Nintendo's apple m8403 Wii uses physics - the location and movement of the controller through space - to control actions on screen while multitouch is becoming the interface of choice for smartphones like

On small screens, multitouch makes sense for tasks such as expanding views,apple powerbook g4 , making edits and manipulating objects onscreen. But move up to a notebook, and the technology begins to lose out on ease of use.

So far, touch interface on conventional laptops has been largely confined to the touchpad.

Earlier this year, Microsoft showed off the multitouch interface for Windows 7 but with the operating system unlikely to be released before 2010,ASM 92P1132, it will be a while before laptop buyers can see it on their screens.

Slowing adoption is a lack of standard touch gestures used universally across manufacturers and applications. With the wide diversity of devices available, 40Y6795,users are never sure what a particular touch gesture on their laptop will translate into, says Andre.

It's a little like the voice commands system available in cars today, he says. "Most drivers never use it because they don't know what commands are available and how to activate them,ASM 92P1140," says Andre.

Fujitsu Siemens Amilo Pi 3625 review

Boasting a 17-inch LCD screen, the Fujitsu Siemens (FSC) Amilo Pi 3625 is an affordable desktop replacement which falls slightly short on performance,battery, but still offers reasonable all-round usability.

The 17-inch 1440 x 900-pixel screen dominates the laptop. It provides bright, vivid colours and is great for watching films – especially with the built-in Blu-Ray drive – and working with multiple windows open. The Super-TFT coating does produce reflections,fujitsu fpcbp63, but they aren't too distracting.

For such a large laptop, it is a little disappointing to find an integrated GPU handling the graphics. As with most of the other laptops at this price point, only the lightest gaming is possible, and heavy video editing isn't an option. This does have its advantages though,fujitsu laptop battery, as it keeps costs down and extends the battery life.

Thanks to the laptop's screen size, there is room for a large keyboard with a dedicated numeric pad. It is a joy to use, thanks to the large and responsive keys,pb992a, with only the small and cramped directional keys letting it down.

While the plastics used to construct the laptop aren't the most exciting,fujitsu fpcbp68, build quality is good throughout. The laptop is solidly built but, at 3.4kg portability isn't great. The glossy lid provides plenty of protection for the screen, but is susceptible to scratching.

A mid-range Intel Core 2 Duo processor provides the power and is joined by 4096MB of memory. Performance is fairly average, but the system runs smoothly most of time,fujitsu fpcbp80 , and we noticed only minor lag when running several applications at once. The 320GB hard drive is nice and capacious and provides plenty of storage space for your media collections and other files.

Four USB ports are placed around the FSC's chassis, which is fairly standard for a laptop at this price,fujitsu fpcbp95, so there's plenty of room for various peripherals. There is also an eSATA port which is great for backing up your files on to an external hard drive.

However, if you are looking to hook the laptop up to an old monitor, you will have to purchase a separate adaptor as the FSC features only a DVI output,fujitsu fpcbp77, which is suitable for digital connections only. Rounding off the specification is a 15-in-1 memory card reader, which is a very flexible card reader.

If the Amilo Pi 3625 featured a graphics card with dedicated video memory, it could have been a contender for an award. As it doesn't,398876-001,pb994a , pb991a multimedia performance is too low, which is a shame because the great screen and keyboard make this laptop a bit of a missed opportunity.

Whatever you decide, the most important thing is that you end up with a notebook that will meet your needs today and tomorrow. Tune in next week for tips on finding the portable that's best for you.

For one thing, prices are expected to be especially low this holiday season. With the release of Windows Vista for the consumer market delayed until January 30, 2007 (assuming Microsoft meets its projection),dell laptop battery

Another reason to buy now is to get a tax deduction for 2006. Or you might simply want to start a new year with a new computer.

Microsoft's Windows Vista promises to be a significant upgrade to Windows XP. For example, depending upon the Windows XP version that your new notebook runs and the version of Vista that you want to upgrade to later, you may need to do a clean install--which is fairly time-consuming, because you'll need to back up all of your data, applications, and settings to an external drive or computer (which you should do anyway), then reinstall everything. How do you know if you'll need to do a clean install or could get away with in-place upgrade? Check out Microsoft's Upgrade Planning chart. Are you the type who waits for a service upgrade before migrating to a new operating system? If you are, go ahead and buy your new notebook now--you could be waiting a while for that upgrade. The first generations of Microsoft's OSes have a reputation for being problematic,inspiron 600m battery, due to device driver incompatibilities, security holes, and so forth. In fact, some companies routinely wait for the first service pack upgrade before transitioning their computers to a new Microsoft operating system.

Finding the Best Notebook

Go online. Not to toot our horn, but I always start the buying process with a visit to PC World's Laptops Info Center, where I review our top notebook charts. I print out a copy of each chart (all-purpose, power, and ultraportable) and then read reviews of the models that interest me most.

I also consult PC World's most recent reliability and hp f2024b service survey. The report includes an easy-to-use chart that shows how each computer company rates in a variety of reliability and service areas.

Next, I go to the Consumer Reports site (which requires a $20 annual subscription for full access) and print out its most recent laptop chart, which rates omnibook xe3 battery on ergonomics, display, speed, and other areas. I also check its "Brand repair history" charts, which show you which computer makers have the most or fewest laptop repairs, according to CR readers. And I cross-reference CR's top laptop picks to see which, if any, also appear on PC World's charts.

Handle Notebook Batteries Carefully

Knowing that lithium ion notebook batteries can catch fire or overheat under certain circumstances is one thing. Seeing photos of a laptop in flames, and reading reports of such incidents, is quite another.

The possibility, though miniscule, of a lithium ion battery igniting was raised during last summer's massive safety recalls of said batteries. The biggest problem related to the recall, in fact, was the inconvenience that many notebook owners experienced, having to return their hp laptop battery and go without while waiting for a replacement to be shipped.

At any rate, the recalls served as an important reminder: We should all take basic safety precautions when traveling with a notebook. AMD answers Intel with six-core processor

Among other new features, AMD is touting an Istanbul technology called HT Assist. The previous way of retrieving data from the processor's memory was "like checking every room in your house for your car keys,apple a1175 , " said Pat Patla, AMD's general manager of the server workstation group, in a phone interview last week. With HT Assist, "You know where your car keys are," he said. "It's much more efficient and takes out a lot of traffic," Patla added.

Patla also said that AMD is ahead of schedule with this chip, in stark contrast with the company's ill-fated quad-core Barcelona processor, which saw repeated delays. "Within almost a 15-month period of time we were able to design the product, tape out the product (final stage before production), apple a1185 , verify the product and launch," Patla said about Istanbul.

Systems based on six-core AMD Opteron processors are expected to be available beginning this month from server suppliers including Cray, Dell, Hewlett-Packard, apple m8403, IBM and Sun Microsystems, AMD said Monday.

'Android' Eee PC: The un-Intel Netbook

An Eee PC Netbook based on a Qualcomm processor that runs Google's Android operating system looks promising as an alternative to the millions of Netbooks out there tethered to Intel Atom processors and Microsoft Windows.

Asus was showing a Netbook at the Computex conference in Taipei running the Android OS on top of Qualcomm's Snapdragon processor, travelmate 2300 battery , according to this TweakTown video.

When Asus plans to ship a Netbook based on Qualcomm's Snapdragon processor isn't clear and Asus is not disclosing its plans (later this year?), but it becomes even less clear when you add Google's Android operating system to the mix. Michael Rayfield, an Nvidia executive,travelmate 4000 battery , doesn't expect Android Netbooks to appear commercially until next year.

What is clear, however, is that these Netbooks are different from the Windows-Intel variety. Qualcomm is calling them "smartbooks" rather than Netbooks to draw attention to the fact that they will operate more like smartphones: standard 3G connectivity, always-on,travelmate 290 battery , and all-day battery life.

And what makes this Asus demonstration at Computex interesting is that all Asus Netbooks to date have run on Intel processors. Obviously,acer batcl50l , Asus thinks the Snapdragon technology is different enough to warrant a separate design.

Intel's sales chief talks Netbooks vs. notebooks

I spoke briefly with Intel's marketing chief Sean Maloney--who is at Computex this week--on Monday night and asked him about how the wave of low-cost, thin notebooks based on his company's "ULV" (ultra-low-voltage) chips may affect Netbook sales.

New, aesthetically appealing, inexpensive notebooks, such as the $699 Acer Aspire Timeline,acer laptop battery, could make Netbooks less attractive, which pin a lot of their popularity on bargain-basement pricing.

Maloney said Intel is not going to fret over sacrificing one category of laptops because it needs to protect another.

"It's a loser mentality to not develop one segment because you're worried about the other,asus a42-a3
, " he said. "I think we have several years ahead of us where we can innovate the heck out of any of these categories without getting defensive about the other one. You just need to unleash innovation in all of the segments and see what happens."

And what about the new 3G-capable Netbooks--which Qualcomm had dubbed "smartbooks"--appearing at Computex from Asus and upstarts like Mobinnnova which are tied to the ARM processor and sold through telecommunications providers? "The more the merrier. The more innovation there will be. It's good for the industry to have competition,acer btp-arj1," Maloney said.

Maloney continued. "We've shipped very large numbers of Netbooks through service providers in the last year and a half. And, how important is the rollout of the new ULV chips? "This is a big announcement and it's kind of on par with the original announcements we made with the original Centrino,acer aspire 1300," Maloney said.

"Fashion is going to play an ever-bigger role (in notebooks). It's like the cell phone industry four or five years ago. An incredible number of designs are coming out in the thin form factor."

"Very light, very thin, and incredibly long battery life," he said of the ULV laptops. Sounds a lot like the evolution of the Netbook--except it isn't called a Netbook. For a device often called a USB "key," the tiny flash drives people carry around with them are generally not well-suited to being attached to a key ring. Most have plastic bodies,laptop battery,and in our experience, the plastic key ring loops inevitably break after a few weeks or months.

LaCie's IamaKey USB flash drive offers a potential solution with a new drive that is, amusingly, shaped like a key. More importantly, the entire device is made of metal,pa3285u-1brs, including the key ring connector at the top end.

As chronicled in this blog post, our main purpose for attaching a USB drive to a keychain is to have handy access to files. Testing several new laptops every week, key drives are useful for storing and transferring all the install files for software apps that should be on a new laptop, but aren't (such as Firefox,pa3285u-2brs, AVG Free, and Open Office).

LaCie claims the drive offers transfer speeds of up to 30 MBps in read mode and up to 10MBps in write mode. Our tests, using 6.68GB files, found this to be close to real-world performance. Writing the file took 12 minutes and 32 seconds, for a transfer rate of 9.3MBps; and reading the same file took 4 minutes and 29 seconds, for a transfer rate of 26.1MBps. That's typical for USB flash drives,pa3284u-1brs, although some models can offer nearly twice the write speed.

Thinner than plastic USB keys, the IamaKey is 2.2 inches long by 0.94 inch wide by just 0.12 inch thick--about the same dimensions as a typical house key. Both 4GB ($26) and 8GB ($36) versions are identical, and the actual USB connection on the end is gold-plated, which LaCie claims makes the drive both water- and scratch-resistant. Dell's Latitude 2100 brings Netbooks to schools

Aiming to bring small, low-cost laptops to schools, Dell has just announced the Latitude 2100,notebook battery,a Netbook specifically targeted to educational markets. We recently got a chance to take a brief hands-on look at the Latitude 2100--and we think its appeal will go far beyond the classroom.

The basic components are similar to what you'd find in almost any other Netbook--Intel Atom CPU, 1GB of RAM, Windows XP--but the chassis of the Latitude 2100 is specifically designed with young users in mind. Somewhat thicker and heavier than typical consumer Netbooks,y9943, the system has a semi-rugged feel and a thick rubberized cover, along with an optional anti-microbial keyboard.

The entire package reminded us in some ways of the original Intel Classmate laptops,dell inspiron 630m battery, which were the first examples of Netbooks. One new feature that seems especially intriguing (but may tax the Intel Atom processor) is an optional touch screen.

To appeal specifically to educational buyers, the systems include a handful of unique features, including a small light on the back of the lid,dell inspiron 640m battery, called the Network Activity Light. It can interact with third-party software or simply turn on when students are surfing the Web (instead of working on classwork), which can help teachers keep track of the status of everyone in the classroom.

Another interesting feature is an optional rolling storage cart, called the Mobile Computing Station, which can sit in a classroom and hold 24 Latitude 2100 Netbooks. Students can slide their systems into what is essentially a giant docking station after class,dell inspiron e1405 battery, where the Netbooks can be recharged and even remotely updated via LAN by the school's IT administrators.

By adding this kind of business-like remote management, we can see the Latitude 2100 crossing over into mainstream corporate environments,dell xps m140 battery where the options for business-class Netbooks are very slim (although they include the excellent HP Mini 2140). Six things we'd like to see in future Netbooks

Netbooks now comprise 8 percent of the laptop market, but are we satisfied? Intel says no: its "Pine Trail" roadmap (that's the code name for its next-gen Atom processors) reveals plans for an integrated CPU/GPU, with claims of saving space as well as battery life. While the graphics power likely won't be as impressive as an Nvidia ION processor, it will change the landscape of a pretty fast-growing field. Here's what we'd like to see in the near-future of Netbooks. Sound off and tell us what you're looking for--that is, if you're looking for a Netbook at all.

1. Better video. While Atom processors can handle YouTube and some HD video streaming (kinda sorta), there are no DVD drives on these little guys. Video-playing (especially streaming) needs to be silky-smooth, even in HD. Until then, Netbooks will never be truly great portable media devices,d5318, which they ought to be. After all, Web browsing is most of what we do with computers.

2. Smaller, please! But with larger keyboards. The whole 11.6-inch and higher trend is disturbing because it's making semi-bulky Netbooks even larger. While it's nice for some applications and those who want an affordable 12-inch laptop, this whole XL Netbook trend takes away from the whole gee-whiz "look how small my notebook is!" appeal that made Netbooks an overnight hit in the first place. What we're really saying is: make better use of the size. Edge-to-edge keyboards and edge-to-edge screens should become the norm, and with better engineering,u4873, we'd like to see 10-inch Netbooks become even thinner and more compact. A Netbook could feel like a small paperback book, not a portable VCR.

3. Adopt modern operating systems. XP and Linux make Netbooks seem a bit lost in time, and honestly, a 10-incher at 1,024x600 gets crowded for programs made for larger screens. How about an optimized upgrade? Consider the iPhone OS: its great success was designing an interface specifically created for the size and ergonomics of the device's screen. In fact,dell inspiron 6000 battery, hey: a modified iPhone OS wouldn't be a bad idea at all for a Netbook. While Windows 7 is aimed at going multiplatform, we also hope it considers optimizing the experience for smaller screens.

4. Get even cheaper. A large part of the Netbook appeal, to this point, has been price. At a cost of $43 for an Atom processor versus $133 for a Core 2 Duo,dell inspiron 9300 battery, machines can be cheaper. But we want cheaper still. The challenge: come under 100 bucks. Already, Dell's got a $299 Netbook, and HP's got a subsidized Mini through Verizon. As "Pine Trail" makes its way through the Netbook landscape, it would be really, really great if those old Atom N270 processors could be discounted into ultra-cheapie models.

5. Explore the tablet. Is that so wrong? Opening a minikeyboard and screen can solve some mobile writing issues, but a regular smartphone can do many of the tasks we associate with "mobile computing." Make the screen larger (for instance, a tablet), and have an optional keyboard (software and/or otherwise),dell inspiron 9400 battery, and perhaps we'll have a more media-friendly mobile PC than the bulkier, thicker Netbook population. Is this Apple's plan? Perhaps. But it should, possibly, be everyone's. We're already starting to see some touch screens hit the Netbook space: Dell's education-targeted Latitude 2100 offers it as an option, and the Asus has a swiveling touch-screen Netbook on the horizon. Toshiba Satellite Pro L300D-EZ1001V All-Purpose Laptop

You certainly won't find perfection in a $649 laptop, but the Toshiba laptop battery Pro L300D-EZ1001V does have a nice screen and sufficient processing power to get you through a day of e-mailing, wordsmithing, and listening to a little music. As a second laptop for your home office or a very basic business portable, the L300D-EZ1001V is ideal.

Let's face it, though: At this price, you can't expect blistering speed. Equipped with a 1.9-GHz Athlon 64 X2 TK-57 processor and only 1GB of RAM, the L300D-EZ1001V turned in a distinctly undistinguished WorldBench 6 score of 57, a mark that instantly sinks its standing. Some new toshiba portege m200 battery may be twice as much, but they're almost twice as fast too. (Take Sony's budget-minded VGN-NR485, which sells for $200 more--it reached a WorldBench 6 score of 75.) Clearly, heavy-duty multitasking and number-crunching are pretty much out of the question with the L300D-EZ1001V. And considering that it pulls video memory from main RAM, it will never be appropriate for playing 3D online games; in some of our gaming tests it registered appalling frame-rate scores, in the single digits (basically slide shows).

The battery life was not as disappointing as the speed, but it wasn't exceptionally good news either at a brief 2 hours, 18 minutes on a single charge of the 4000-mAh power pack. (The average battery usually reaches around 3 hours before running out.) The only recent toshiba portege m400 battery-life standout in the all-purpose laptop category is Lenovo's ThinkPad SL400, which lasted 5 hours, 8 minutes in tests, but the SL400 unit we evaluated cost $1223 and packed an optional high-powered battery. Obviously, an outstanding performer the L300D-EZ1001V is not--but stick with mainstream applications and take the power cord along, and you should be fine.

This Windows Vista Home Basic machine offers a decent set of features highlighted by a reasonably bright 15.4-inch screen. You get a standard (not high-definition) DVD burner, three USB ports,toshiba tecra m4 battery, an ExpressCard/54 slot, and a combination SD/Memory Stick card slot. The 6.7-pound weight of the unit (including the battery) is good enough. The rear has a quasi-dropped-hinge look; the only connection on the back is a modem jack.

The design rises above the price tag in other respects. The 120GB hard drive has a pull loop for easy removal, and its protective cover has captive screws. The smooth-working volume wheel is within easy reach on the front of the laptop. The machine offers sweet stereo sound, too: Though the L300D-EZ1001V might be from the bargain bin, it's still a dell xps m1210 battery, which means its speakers are better than those of the average laptop, even portables that might cost twice as much.

Where the L300D-EZ1001V reflects its price is in the occasional cheap-feeling part. There's only so much Toshiba can do with this 14.3-by-10.5-by-1.5-inch bargain box. For example, the Wi-Fi switch feels chintzy. The keyboard offers a good layout but has a very hard, loud stroke that some typists might not like; the mouse buttons are remarkably stiff too. Strictly as a matter of personal taste,nf343, the lid release seems big and clumsy, not to mention unnecessary for the screen size.

But those are cheap shots at what is overall a decent deal. It's definitely no speed demon, and you can find better ibm thinkpad r40 battery life in the upper price tiers, but the L300D-EZ1001V is about as good as it gets for the money. One last thing to keep in mind is that just before posting this review, we learned that Toshiba is replacing the EZ1001V with the 1002V model. The updated laptop offers a discrete GPU, ATI's Radeon X1250, and adds $50 to the price (for a total of $699). That'll obviously boost its marks in graphics tests--of course, we don't have any numbers to give you just yet. Our advice, regardless: If you're watching your bottom line like a hawk (who isn't these days?), consider the L300D.

The aftermarket battery trade is a fact of life and will likely grow in the coming years, but that doesn't mean the notebook makers have to like it. I asked several leading laptop manufacturers if they believe aftermarket batteries are dangerous to use and if using them invalidates the notebooks' warranties. While Apple, Hewlett-Packard and Dell did not respond to my repeated queries, Lenovo and Toshiba agreed to discuss the issue.

Neither manufacturer said that aftermarket toshiba satellite m105 battery is dangerous, but they stressed that their batteries were designed and manufactured expressly for their equipment. A Lenovo representative said, "We do not support the use of nongenuine Lenovo batteries in ThinkPads. While using an aftermarket battery doesn't invalidate a notebook's warranty in and of itself, the manufacturers probably wouldn't repair a notebook under warranty that has been damaged by a faulty aftermarket battery, according to company representatives.
